MIKHAÏL GORBACHEV - My Manifesto for the Earth

August 26, 2002

The Book

When Mikhail Gorbachev launched the policies of transparency (glasnost) and reorganisation (perestroika) in the USSR, Soviet society entered into effervescence and, five years later, the world map changed.

Today, he calls for a policy of transparency and reorganisation in all that effects the development of our communal life on the planet Earth.  In evoking his childhood marked by the powerful natural setting in the Caucasus, he retraces his personal journey, which was deeply impacted by the devastating catastrophe of Chernobyl and his new ecological awareness that led him to create the organization known as Green Cross International.  Confronted with the economic, social and environmental crisis, he calls for a revision of values and collective consciousness, an immense Perestroika for the 21st century without which measures taken will be doomed to failure.

Putting unique experience and reflection at the disposal of all, Mikhail Gorbachev proposes, for the first time in this essay, his solutions so that the fundamental battle for the survival of the planet is engaged.

In 1917, the poet Velimir Khlebnikov proclaimed all creators “presidents of the globe,” thus rising up against war and the authority of States over human beings.  Mikhail Gorbachev today dreams that each conscientious citizen of the Earth will become a planetary president and shoulder a portion of responsibility for the future of the world.

Mikhaïl Gorbachev, born March 2, 1931 in the province of Stavropol (USSR), ex-President of the USSR, author of numerous essays including Perestroika, J’ai lu; Pre-Mémoires, Odile Jacob; Mémoires and Dialogues for Peace, Le Rocher.
Green Cross International founded in 1993 by Mikhail Gorbachev contributes to a just, sustainable and secure future for all by cultivating a new sense of global interdependence and shared responsibility in humanity’s relationship with nature.
On September 5th, at the Cité des Sciences et de l’Industrie in Paris, Mikhail Gorbachev will deliver his analysis of the second Earth Summit and will attest to his commitment to the cause of sustainable development.
