Japan has organized three conferences on the Earth Charter in
order to disseminate the information of this initiative. Some
of the proposals made by the Japan Earth Charter Committee were
taken into account by the Earth Charter Drafting Committee.
Today activities on this topic are slowing down.
A group of researchers linked to Mr. Iwasaki are very active
in developing a new device, named Octopus, which is able to
reduce the energy consumption in air conditioners. The system
improves the efficiency of exchange in the cooling system. The
prototype of Octopus has been tested in different state laboratories
and a worldwide patent was recently delivered. Octopus is one
of the practical solutions which could contribute to the diminishment
of CO2 emissions.
GC Japan is one of the most important financial supporters of
the Tree
Planting project implemented in Burkina Faso in order to
fight the desertification of the country.
In environmental education program, with the support of the
Education Ministry of Japan, GC Japan launched in 1998-1999
the Dairy Contest with great success. Children are encouraged
to act for environment protection and to report in their personal
dairy. More than 300 schools participated in the first edition;
this number will be multiplied by five in 2000.
The
list of national projects is long; it covers the distribution
of recycled toilet paper in primary schools to the collection
of cans and milk packing for recycling (Pictures).
Members are encouraged to sell organic and natural products,
such as organic fertilizer.
Members are also encouraged to participate in and to promote
the tree planting days organized in different cities on Environmental
Day.
The dairy contest will facilitate the starting of a new project
involving children called the Ecokids Scout. Connection with
the Green Cross Youth, initiated by GC
Switzerland, is desirable.
