The most egregious environmental violator is the Mohave Generating Station
located in Nevada. Mohave is majority owned and operated by Southern California
Edison and supplies 20% of its power to the Los Angeles Department of Water
and Power(LADWP). It was grandfathered into the Clean Air Act, has few pollution
controls, and is the center of several law suits, including a recently filed
action by the Navajo nation.
"Citizens of California can now vote with their electricity dollars
to help the environment," said V. John White of the Center of Energy
Efficiency and Renewable Technologies. "By making a three minute phone
call, you switch to a green electricity company, help clean our air, and
switch off the coal furnaces for good."
Green or renewable power includes generation from wind, solar, geothermal,
and biomass sources. It is naturally renewed and causes little or no emissions
into the air. |
