Earth Charter
Program Description
Green Cross strives to improve law and governance systems protecting
the environment. To promote this goal, Green Cross helped draft the Earth
Charter which embodies fundamental values and principles and is intended
to serve as a universal code of conduct to guide people and nations towards
a sustainable future. In partnership with the Earth Council and other
like-minded organizations worldwide, we are contributing to the further
development of the Earth Charter through a global participatory process.
We are working to have the Earth Charter endorsed by the United Nations
through regional seminars, national hearings, and an interactive drafting
effort.

1999, June 4 : Earth Charter Committee Meeting in Japan.
The Green Cross Japan is organizing a first Earth Charter Committee
meeting, following the discussions they had with Mr. Maurice Strong
and Maximo Kalaw last February. The purpose of having this meeting is
to involve representatives from all major stakeholders in the country
that have impact on sustainable development, especially the National
Councils for Sustainable Development (JNCSD). They are extending their
committee to new organizations in order to make this a more participatory
