ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION: ON THE THRESHOLD OF RIO + 10

First announcement
The world summit on sustainable development Rio+10 will be held in September 2002. The objective is to analyze the progress achieved by the world community in the field of sustainable development in the course of Agenda 21 implementation. The key factor of the community sustainable development is environmental education aiming at fundamental changing of the people’s consciousness in respect to Nature, the existing stereotype of thinking and behavior, mechanisms of economics and social development. Each country and person have to regard new principles of ethics, culture and fairness based on the system of restrictions and bans, dictated by laws of the biosphere development. In this context environmental education acquires a new function: it becomes the education for sustainable development providing the society movement to environmentally safe civil peace. This is quite a new problem for the whole educational system and it is very important now to analyze its scale and meaning, and start to tackle it. Green Cross Russia puts forward the initiative to hold the VIIIth International conference on environmental education Environmental Education on the Threshold of Rio + 10. The conference objective – to analyze achievements in the field of environmental education for the last 10 years, re-comprehend the role and the essence of education in the course of the society transfer to qualitative changes of its development, to outline the priority-driven orientations and efficient mechanisms of their practical implementation. The following subjects are supposed to be discussed:
It is planned to hold plenary and section meetings, a poster session, seminars in the framework of the conference. The program committee will draft the scientific program of the presentations received. The program committee independently will define the presentation format, subjects of sections meetings and seminars.

The deadline for abstracts submission - February 15, 2002
The invitation to the conference will be sent before April 20, 2002 after abstracts’ approval by the Program Committee.
The registration fee is $50.
