Ingvar Gösta CARLSSON

Former Prime Minister of Sweden


Ingvar Gösta Carlsson was born on 9 November 1934.
He is married to Ingrid, and has two daughters.

Education:

1958 Degree in Political Science and Economics at the University of Lund.

1961 Studied economics at North-western University in the United States.


Political Career:

1958-60 Special Assistant in the Cabinet Office to the Prime Minister, Tage Erlander.

1961-67 Chairman of the Swedish Social Democratic Party Youth League.

1964-96 Member of Parliament.

1967-69 Under-Secretary of State at the Cabinet Office.

1969-73 Minister for Education and Cultural Affairs.

1971-74 Chairman of the County of Stockholm, Branch of the Social Democratic Party.

1972-96 Member of the National Board of the Social Democratic Party.

1973-76 Minister for Housing and Physical Planning.

1975-96 Member of the Executive Committee of the Social Democratic National Board.

1982-86 Deputy Prime Minister with special responsibility for political planning and co-ordination of research policy.

1985-86 Also Minister of the Environment.

1986-91 Prime Minister of Sweden.

1986-90 Member of the Six Nations initiative (India, Mexico, Tanzania, Canada, Greece, Argentina and Sweden) to support nuclear disarmament.

1986-96 Chairman of the Social Democratic Party.

1992- Co-chairman of the Commission on Global Governance.

1993-96 Prime Minister of Sweden.


Current Activities:

· Since 1997, he is member of the Advisory Board to the UN Staff College.
· Also since 1997, Chairman of the Foundation for Strategic Research.
· Chairman of Olof Palme International Center.
· Participating in the Inquiry into the UN Actions during the 1994 Genocide in Rwanda.
